Director, LEAN Manufacturing, Canada

Position Summary

Reporting to the President and Chief Operating Officer, Canada, the Director, LEAN Manufacturing, Canada is responsible for providing overall leadership to improve:  profitability, quality products, and levels of service to our retail partners through the continual identification and elimination of waste, using a Company standard work, continuous improvement, and problem-solving framework for implementation across all Canadian Service Centres.  This position has regional responsibility for implementing continuous improvement tools and methods centred around LEAN manufacturing and business process improvements to meet annual operating goals and strategic objectives.  The Director will collaborate with functional/best practice leads and Service Centre General Managers to provide strategic direction, as well as organize and implement continuous improvement methodologies, with a focus on LEAN leadership, team involvement, and change management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads the strategic and operational design, planning, and implementation initiatives in LEAN manufacturing using internal processes that focus on both information and product flow methodologies using a team approach and measures of success
  • In collaboration with the President and COO, Canada, establishes operational KPI's to support the priorities identified under the organization's current long-term business plan, both at the individual Service Centre and corporate levels
  • Ensures that agreed upon waste elimination targets are tracked and Service Centres are accountable to meet and/or exceed their agreed upon targets
  • Coordinates and leads LEAN integration and deployment, including events, at the Service Centre level using a Company's standard work framework for implementation
  • Provides LEAN leadership by demonstrating the necessary commitment to continuous improvement at a senior level and removing barriers that slow successful improvement initiatives
  • Supports implementation of new products by partnering with the Service Centre management teams while ensuring overall readiness prior to product launches
  • Establishes, continually tests, updates, and meets the established business processes for not only the Winnipeg Service Centre activities, but also, in collaboration with the CI Best Practice leader in Camp Hill, PA, for North America as best practices are identified and implemented
  • Designs and coordinates detailed analysis of key business processes, including data gathering, investigating cause-effect relationships, and measuring processing performance
  • Develops and implements operational performance metrics and tracking processes to measure the effectiveness of business process improvements
  • Uses data and statistical analysis to assist in measuring and improving operational performance
  • Leads from the front and models Vantage's core values in interactions with customers, co-workers, and suppliers, and the communities in which we operate
  • Ensures customer concerns or issues on business process improvements are addressed by the appropriate Vantage representative, and empowering Vantage employees to resolve customer issues in as efficient a manner as possible
  • Supports Canadian Service Centre General Managers with analysis around capacity and staffing levels using flexible plans based off actual work content and assists in identifying opportunities to reduce waste
  • Creates and administers training with the goal of developing others in business process improvements and LEAN principles
  • Assumes projects and project management as assigned by the President and COO, Canada

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Thorough understanding of all production processes associated with running a major meat processing facility will be required to be successful in this position
  • Able to understand and demonstrate how Vantage’s core values can be delivered on a daily basis, within a fast-paced, customer-driven operating environment
  • Focus on results, a bias for action, and an effective personal leadership style will be necessary
  • Ability and willingness to train and develop others
  • Strong analytical, written, computer, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to track, document, and report operational results required

Qualifications

  • University degree, supplemented by seven or more years of progressively more senior supervisory and management experience within the case-ready meats business
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering solid operating results in a way that encourages teamwork and employee engagement
  • Project Management experience
