HACCP/Lab Management Specialist

Position Summary

The incumbent possesses excellent communication skills and previous experience within the regulated meat/food processing industry.  Primary responsibilities include: developing HACCP programs and ensuring compliance with CFIA regulations.  The HACCP Specialist will assist all areas in achievement of manufacturing objectives pertaining to quality, efficiency, and food safety, as well as ensuring products maintain quality standards.  Additionally, the incumbent will provide assistance with resolving customer complaints, and oversight of the Quality Assurance laboratory.  This individual is expected to present a professional and respectful attitude when dealing with both internal and external contacts and will facilitate a team atmosphere within the Service Centre.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development, implementation, and maintenance of HACCP system
  • Development, implementation, and maintenance of a GFSI quality system best practice standards
  • Set and monitor standards, including the production, shipping, receiving, and packaging areas
  • Acts as the main conduit of information between the plant, external auditors, or government regulators
  • Create forms to ensure well-documented compliance with all standards
  • Responsible for accurate and comprehensive records that may be routinely audited
  • Communicate standards to members of the management and supervisory team
  • Monitor yearly objectives and work towards achieving them
  • Train employees to ensure compliance with all programs
  • Oversee laboratory accreditation program

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Update current FSEP program requirements and perform yearly re-assessment
  • Update current HACCP programs, verifications, and re-assessment
  • Perform record checks and onsite verifications
  • Train employees on FSEP/HACCP procedures and company policies
  • Train employees on GMP’s
  • Collaborate with CFIA Inspectors, Operations, and Quality Assurance when resolving food safety issues
  • Assist with third party and regulatory audits with QA Manager
  • Support the creation of Quality Assurance policies and procedures
  • Facilitate the handling customer complaints
  • Assist with testing and other special projects
  • Maintain document control program and annual policies/procedures review
  • Provide back up to the Quality Assurance Technicians as needed
  • Additional duties as assigned


  • Relevant post-secondary education in Science or related course of study
  • Able to work in a highly detailed environment
  • Clearly establish priorities and follow through on them
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Previous experience in FSEP, HACCP, and BRC programs is required
  • Knowledge of ISO standards and framework considered an asset
  • Skilled user of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be open and flexible to change
  • Must take initiative and provide ongoing follow-up to ensure compliance with all standards
  • Ability to work in a team environment and/or independently as projects require.
  • Ability to make quick, logical decisions based on risk assessment
