Operations Manager (meat processing)

OPERATIONS MANAGER – Belleville Service Center
Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Service Centre General Manager and being a key member of the Senior Management Team, the Operations Manager is responsible for all of the production operations within the Service Center. This includes effectively managing the day-to-day relationships on product yields, specifications and production volumes with our customer; ensuring that Vantage’s Brand Promise is met by the Service Center (SC) production staff and management at all times; and that our core values are reflected in our operating decisions, practices, policies and actions. As part of delivering on our Brand Promise, the Operations Manager will ensure a respectful workplace for staff and customers including all food and workplace safety requirements are being met or exceeded.

Key Responsibilities
Some of the key responsibilities for the SC Operations Manager include:
 Establish, continually test, update and meet the established product yield specification on all finished products.
 Establish, monitor and update product yield specifications to meet customer needs. Continually work with production management to ensure staff understand and meet established product specifications, production process and procedural requirements, food quality and food safety requirements; and the requirements for a safe workplace.
 Continuously improve the production schedule (workflow, production processes, staffing model, production floor layout, etc.) to meet lean manufacturing objectives and reinforce continuous improvement processes within the SC and promote a “best-in-class” facility.
 Maintain food quality and food safety requirements and meet or exceed the requirements for a safe workplace.
 Provide the daily production direction to ensure the SC meets our customer Brand Promise of defect free products, with service levels greater than 98.5%.
 As a key member of the SC management team, establish annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly objectives in support of the SC’s goals and objectives. Working within the management rhythm, ensure the Production group regularly reviews the action plans required to progress towards achieving these objectives and guide any remedial action required on an individual or team basis within the group.
 Ensure the production management and supervisors understand and model Vantage’s core values with respect to our customers, our employees, our suppliers and the communities in which we operate.
 Ensure customer concerns or issues are addressed by the appropriate Vantage Foods representative, and empowering Vantage employees to resolve customer issues in as efficient a manner as possible.
 Schedule appropriate levels of production staff to effectively meet our Brand Promise.
 Manage the employee relations direction and activities within the production group in a way that reflects our core value as it relates to our employees and contractors. Includes establishing effective performance and learning management goals and objectives on both a team and an individual basis and working with the members in the production group to achieve those objectives.
 Ensure compliance with all company policies and relevant provincial /federal legislation.
 Responsible for compliance with Health & Safety regulations in area of responsibility – developing a safety culture where individual safety is held at the same level as production.
 Ensure HACCP requirements are met in areas of responsibility and enforce HACCP procedures with a strong commitment to food safety.
 Work with the Supply Chain Coordinator/Scheduler to ensure raw material orders, work in progress and finished goods inventory are managed effectively to meet our customers’ requirements.
 Ensure the production plan is accurate and well developed on a daily and weekly basis, and then executed with precision and enthusiasm.
 Ensure the production schedule (workflow, production processes, staffing model, production floor layout, etc.) meets our customer requirements.
 Ensure our production processes are continually being reviewed and improved, to reinforce the continuous improvement required of a “best-in-class” facility.
 Work with the Maintenance Manager to ensure a proper preventative maintenance program is in place and can be effectively delivered with minimal disruption to the production operations.

Key Skills and Competencies

– Ideally possess a Higher Education Diploma or Degree
– Supplemented by at least 5 – 10+ years of progressively more senior supervisory and management experience within the case ready meats business.
– Demonstrated a track record of delivering solid operating results in a way that encourages teamwork and employee engagement.
– Thorough understanding of all production processes associated with running a major meat processing facility will be required to be successful in this position.
– Understand and demonstrate how Vantage’s core values can be delivered on a daily basis, within a fast paced, customer driven operating environment.
– A focus on results, a bias for action and an effective personal leadership style will be necessary.
– Relocation support will be considered.
