Senior Manager, Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA)

Location: Belleville, Ontario

Reporting to the Canadian President or his designate, the incumbent is responsible for ongoing FSQA Service Centre operational leadership. This includes developing a systematic approach to food safety through best practice, with a focus on creating and nurturing a food safety culture within the facility.

More specifically, operational support is provided to:

  • A 200-employee case-ready fresh meat operation containing primary ground beef processing; and fresh sausage and whole muscle processing
  • A start-up seafood processing operation for 80 employees, including: ready-to-eat hot and cold smoking operation; value-added spreads and sausage processing; and fresh seafood bulk and case-ready processing

Key Responsibilities

Managing and Developing the FSQA Team

  • Lead, develop, and maintain a respectful work environment through employee engagement, team building, open and timely communication, collaboration, and effective performance management
  • Accountable for effective talent acquisition, on-boarding, retention, employee development, and succession initiatives within the FSQA Team

Food Safety

  • Ensure compliance with HACCP system to meet regulatory requirements
  • Through continuous improvement initiatives, advance internal audit protocols, including adherence to benchmark standards such as BRC
  • Actively lead the Service Centre’s timely responses to Corrective Action Requests (CAR’s) from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) while maintaining positive relationships with all agency personnel
  • Contribute to design and preventative measures/risk assessment, including product development for launch
  • Recognize developments, anticipate key risks, and put robust measures in place to control those risks
  • Be concise and firm in supporting decisions to hold substandard product, including preparation of required follow up documentation and filing/reporting. Of particular importance are the protocols for high risk grinds and ready to eat products

Quality

  • Ensure compliance of all QA programs, including governance focused on adherence, visibility, functionality, and effectiveness
  • Oversee defect identification initiatives through effective sampling, testing, and inspecting, including required standards for in house laboratory services; defect prevention focus supported by planned and systematic activities, i.e. “living” SOP’s
  • Develop and maintain trend analysis data to support process improvements
  • Cross functional liaison to ensure Service Centre manufacturing, regulatory, and compliance requirements pertaining to quality are met through HACCP and FSQA updates
  • Conduct/monitor testing and evaluation of new equipment with instructions on meeting product specifications

Customer Relationship Management

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships at various organizational levels with our customer to ensure needs are being met, timely information is being communicated, and collaboration occurs to support and build a strong partnership
  • Lead troubleshooting initiatives, including effective and timely resolution of customer complaints
  • Demonstrate professional and respectful behaviour at all time, both inside and outside the workplace

Your Skills and Competencies

  • University degree/diploma in a Science discipline
  • 10+ years of demonstrated leadership experience in FSQA within a multi process food manufacturing environment, preferably in a unionized setting
  • Experience in basic microbiology, auditing, allergen controls, sanitary design, and HACCP principles
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced and regulated environment with changing priorities
